  • A rowdy crowd turned against former Migori governor Okoth Obado during the swearing-in ceremony of his successor Ochilo Ayacko.

Obado who rose to address the gathering, on Thursday, August 25, was booed and jeered, despite his efforts to proceed with his speech.

The incident escalated when officials breached protocol and asked Awendo Member of Parliament-elect Walter Owino to introduce Obado.

Owino’s plea was also rejected as the crowd continued yelling and shouting forcing Ayacko to address them.

After calm was restored, Nyatike lawmaker Tom Odege, Migori Woman Representative Fatuma Mohammed and Uriri MP Mark Nyamita called out Obado and his administration over what they termed as mismanagement of the county resources.

Their sentiments were backed by Suna Central MCA-elect Samuel O’Brien and South Kanyamkago MCA Graham Kagali who also castigated Obado over his support of president-elect William Ruto.

“Ayacko is inheriting a failed government from Obado. We will join him in prayers as he saves our people from looters and liberates Migori from thieves, we will back Ayacko,” Odege stated.

Fatuma also criticized the former governor and Ruto for what she termed as attempts to buy her loyalty since she won her seat as an independent candidate.

“I want to tell Ruto and his agent here that I am fully in ODM. There is no day my loyalty to Raila Odinga can be bought, they can take away his money,” she stated.

Obado who also addressed the crowd, later on, stated that he will not stop supporting Ruto much to the displeasure of the crowd.

“I am in another wing, just leave me there where I am safe. If you think your wing and journey can take you to Canaan just go ahead and good luck. It is a celebration and forgiveness event. Those who attacked me here I have also forgiven them,” he stated.

During the campaign period, Obado rallied the Luo community to support Ruto noting that he holds the best interests for the community. He also urged the community to move on as the election period had ended.
