The murder case involving Rongo University student Sharon Otieno took a fresh twist after police revealed that Migori Governor Okoth Obado’s personal assistant Michael Oyamo had taken responsibility for her pregnancy.
In a testimony before Justice Cecilia Githua, on Thursday, July 21, Police Constable Howard Omwoha told the court that Oyamo confessed to having a relationship with the Rongo University student even before his arrest.
Omwoha divulged that the governor’s aide gave details of the pregnancy and his relationship after he had gone to report a case of an alleged abduction.
The court further heard that Obado’s aide told police that he was abducted after meeting with Sharon who was demanding money over the pregnancy.
The witness stated that Oyamo alleged that the deceased had demanded Ksh600,000 lumpsum and upkeep for the baby amounting to Ksh200,000 per month.
“Oyamo told me he went to Rongo to meet his girlfriend at a restaurant. Later the girlfriend called and stated they meet at a local hotel. He said the girlfriend was Sharon.
“He told me the men had sharp knives and were torturing him demanding Ksh1.5 million. While on the way, he fell unconscious and did not know what transpired until he found himself the following morning on a street in Kisii town. He claimed he was taken to the hospital by members of the public,” the officer testified.
Omwoha’s testimony came a few days after a medical officer attached to the Kisii Teaching and Referal Hospital testified that Oyamo gave money to falsify medical documents to prove that he was sick.
The clinical officer stated that the governor’s aide had planned to use the medical report to show that he was not at the scene of the crime during the incident.
“All the medical documents were forgeries. I am the one who did the forgeries and received Ksh1,500. I regret my actions,” he testified then.
Sharon’s murder case had been ongoing with the prosecution lining witnesses to testify against the Obado, his aide and another employee of the Migori county government.
Her body was found dead in September 2018, a few days after she was reported missing.
