According to his friends, Nyanjwa seemed a troubled man a few months leading to his sudden death.
“He had told us to give him a decent burial if anything happened to him,” one of his colleagues told NTV.
Police officers attached to the investigations however noted that they are yet to determine if Nyanjwa’s work at the commission might have led to his death.
The NLC investigative officer’s woes began in 2020 when he stumbled on vicious cartels when working on a particular case.
Further, Nyanjwa was abruptly transferred to Homa Bay from Ardhi House, Nairobi. He tried to appeal the decision to the NLC management to no avail.
“Further to your transfer to Homa Bay county vide letter dated July 20, 2020, and your appeal dated July 28, 2020, I write to notify you that the matter was deliberated by the commission during its 81st sitting on March 25 and 29,2021.
“It was resolved that you report to Homa Bay county. Pursuant to this, I am writing to ask you to report to Homa Bay with immediate effect,” a letter from acting NLC Secretary-General Kabale Tache stated.
Nyanjwa had collapsed at Soiree Gardens Restaurant along Ngong Road where he had gone for a meeting at around 9 am.
Witnesses stated that the NLC officer did not proceed to the restaurant but instead waited in his car. A few minutes later, he got out of his car and went to the washroom. A steward is said to have seen him staggering and rushed to help him.
“He was struggling to walk and supported himself on the pole. He sat on the pavement where he collapsed. He neither ate nor drank while he was here,†the hotel manager narrated. The hotel’s management rushed him to Coptic Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The deceased was a trained police officer who worked at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation and rose to the rank of Chief Document Investigator. In 2014, he was transferred to NLC where he worked until his death.
Nywanjwa was renowned for being instrumental in the Rwanda genocide case where he testified against the key masterminds who were jailed for life.
