  • Charles Njonjo popularly referred to as “The Duke of Kabeteshire” chose to mark his 101st birthday with family members at his lavish home in Muthaiga, Nairobi County.

Speaking to The Standard, Njonjo’s son-in-law Volker Bassen, revealed that his family chose not to go big with the party owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bassen detailed that Njonjo, who turned 101 on Saturday, January 23, made a request to spend time with family members.

The birthday celebration consisted of his wife Margaret, children, David and Mary.

Bassen’s wife and Njonjo’s first born daughter Wairimu Njonjo was unable to attend the event due to the travel restrictions in London owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The son-in-law highlighted Njonjo’s preferable diet regimen on his birthday.

According to Bassen, Njonjo preferred goat meat, cooked for close to three hours, in an oven.

The meal is, however, never complete without honey and a bottle of beer. For dessert, Njonjo opts for goat yoghurt.

Last year, Njonjo’s family took him to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park where he spent time tracking gorillas.

“I was at King’s College Budo and went there with King Freddie (Kabaja Edward Mutesa I). I am very fond of Uganda. I was lucky to see gorillas, two young ones and two big male,” Njonjo said one time.

Njonjo’s strict diet and fitness has always been the subject of discussion among Kenyans. The centenarian has always looked after himself with monk-like dedication.

Riding for 10 minutes daily on his bicycle, running seven laps, swimming on a daily basis, eating a lot of veggies and avoiding nyama choma are part of his secret to longevity.

The former Attorney General of Kenya, Njonjo boasts of multibillion property having substantial shares in Sankara hotel. Reports indicate that his net worth is estimated to be above Ksh7 billion.
