  • Elgeyo Marakwet Senator, Onesmus Kipchumba Murkomen, has rubbished claims that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was behind rigging attempts at the National Tallying Centre (NTC) located at the Bomas of Kenya and in the Mt Kenya region.

Speaking exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke‘s Ivy Nyawira Gichungo on Thursday, August 12, Murkomen refuted the claims that success achieved by Deputy President William Ruto in Mt Kenya region was as a result of rigging.

He argued that the success trickled down from the presidential race down to the Members of County Assembly (MCA).

“I think Jeremiah Kioni and others are going through stages of grief. They are now at the stage of denial. By tomorrow or the day after, they will be in acceptance. They are allowed to find a basis of explaining their loss. Losing an election is not an easy thing because it is an investment of five years. It is expected that there will be some sour grapes.

“I am happy that we won decisively, not just the Members of Parliament but also all the governors and senators. Also the presidential election was way above 80 per cent in the Mt Kenya region,” Murkomen explained.

Jubilee Party Secretary General, Jeremiah Kioni, had earlier claimed that UDA rigged votes in 33 Mount Kenya constituencies.

In a statement dated Thursday, August 11, Kioni claimed that the ‘Yellow Wave’ by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was fake.

“For the record, let all and sundry know there was no “Yellow Wave” in the Mount Kenya region including other regions like Bungoma, Taita Taveta, Kisii. These claims are far from the truth. There was no infrasound of the so called wave, they say even dogs can smell a tsunami coming.

“It is with great concern that the electoral process was highly compromised. We have learnt of massive subtle rigging scheme that took place in the 33 constituencies of Mount Kenya for the parliamentary elections,” Kioni stated in a letter containing Jubilee Party’s letterhead.

During the interview, Murkomen also rubbished claims that there was an unapproved computer sneaked into the Bomas tallying center to aid in the rigging process.

“Those are the usual antics and diversionary tactics. There is nothing so special about a computer. It is just like your phone, whatever you can do with it, you can do with a computer.

“There are people who wanted to divert attention from the core mandate of the center and what we were doing as verification. If you have to do something on a computer, you don’t have to be at Bomas of Kenya physically,” he explained.

There was a commotion at the tallying center on Friday with Azimio agents protesting the existence of a computer they described as strange.

Overall, Murkomen disclosed that Kenya Kwanza agents were satisfied with the manner in which IEBC was handling the presidential election at the Bomas of Kenya.

He confirmed that the data from the constituency’s whose Forms 34B have been made public is in tandem with their own estimates.

“I am one of the agents for Kenya Kwanza team and we are here to observe the team and make sure that the tallying of the results match the ones in the portal and the ones we have.

“So far so good, for everything that was presented to us, we are confident that everything is going on well and the results are matching what was presented,” Murkomen affirmed.

16 Forms 34B have already been made public and IEBC Vice Chairperson, Juliana Cherera, confirmed that the Commission had hastened its workmanship to clear the backlog.
