  • Nairobi Expressway users have been banned from alighting and taking photos while using the Ksh88 billion highway.

The new directive is part of the road administration manual to guide the general public on the use of the Nairobi Expressway which was discussed in a meeting attended by members from the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) as well as the Kenya Police Service held on Wednesday, May 4.

According to the firm managing the road, the ban will be in place for safety reasons as well as to avoid creating a traffic snarl-up.

Speaking to kenyagist.com, a representative from Moja Expressway indicated that taking photos would also endanger other motorists since speed on the highway is set at 80 km/h.

“Being an Expressway and for safety reasons, motorists will not be allowed to align or take photos on the road.

“The purpose of the highway is to reduce traffic. If some people will be stopping so that they can take photos, that will create a snarl-up against them. The speed is 80 kilometres per hour. Stopping is not really practical,” she explained.

Nairobi Expressway Road Administration stakeholders further confirmed that the highway was 99 per cent complete and that they were undertaking internal testing by the maintenance and road safety department.

As a result, two more service centres were opened along Mombasa Road and Lavington to support the rolling and management of the Nairobi Expressway.

Once opened, the 27-kilometre highway is expected to reduce the time travelled between Mlolongo and James Gichuru road from Three hours to 20 minutes.

The new directive is part of a list of laws to be observed by motorists using the expressway. Two and three-wheeled vehicles will not be allowed on the road.

Pedestrians and skaters were also barred from accessing the highway alongside wheelbarrows, handcarts, bicycles and scooters.

In mid-April, police arrested a pedestrian for allegedly surveying the road, He was at a place deemed off-limits and did not give a satisfactory explanation – prompting the cops to apprehend him.
