Seven of the Kirinyaga County MCAs who earlier sought to impeach governor Anne Waiguru on Friday, April 10, backed down on their plot.

While accompanying the governor to Kagio Market for the Covid-19 sensitisation campaign, the MCAs apologised to the county chief and stated that they had been misled.

The lawmakers did not, however, disclose the identity of the person who had misled them.

Led by Kangai Ward Representative, John Gitari, the MCAs stated that they had changed their minds after Jubilee Party expressed disapproval of their move.

Additionally, they stated that they would now file a formal application to have the Majority Leader in the County Assembly, James Kamau Murang’o, removed from his position.

This is after Murang’o was axed from his position of Majority Leader of Jubilee Party at the Kirinyaga County Assembly in a letter dated April 2.

The motion filed to impeach Waiguru by Mutira Ward Representative, Kinyua Wangui, and supported by Murang’o, accused the governor of gross violation of the constitution, abuse of office and gross misconduct.

The letter was confirmed by Jubilee Communications Director Albert Mwemusi, “Indeed the letter is legit, we did not have an issue with him trying to impeach the governor because this is a free world and the law allows that.

“Our issue was the timing, all our efforts are focused on fighting Covid-19 and we really do not have time for impeachment motions.

“We don’t want to look like we are eating our own as a party because the governor is now trying to find solutions to fight the Coronavirus,” read part of the letter.

Murang’o was also part of a section of Kirinyaga County MCA’s who addressed the media on the impeachment of Waiguru.
