  • Chaos erupted at the launch of the boda boda Information Management System on Monday, August 17, that was presided over by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

Secretary-General of the Boda boda Association of Kenya (BAK) Ken Onyango was roughed up and thrown out of the meeting as some of the members were angered by his comments.

Police were forced to intervene to restore calm before the arrival of Matiang’i in the meeting held at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in Ngara, Nairobi.

Onyango on Sunday, August 16, threatened to move to court arguing that the Interior Ministey launched the system without proper public participation from the affected stakeholders.

He raised questions as to why he was being thrown out of a meeting that would discuss matters directly affecting members of his association.

“I have members and the issues being discussed here are specific issues that touch on our people, why is it that I am being thrown out of a meeting that also NTSA is explaining issues important to our people.

“I am being descended upon with blows, you have just seen for yourself,” he stated.

Members who threw him out of the meeting claimed that he did not register himself at the reception desk for the meeting as required in adherence to health and safety guidelines.

Matiang’i in response to the drama that marred the launched urged for people to make sensible remarks even as they aim to stay relevant.

“In life, you have to be relevant, we need to help many of our people to be relevant even when you are doing your politics you need to be relevant and say things that make sense.

“We are here today to launch the Boda boda Information Management System, we formed the task force in November 2018 which gave us a draft of the report last year,” noted Matiang’i.

The system will make it easier for law enforcement agencies to winnow out criminals masquerading as Boda Boda operators and protect genuine riders engaging in legitimate income-generating activities.
