Speaking to kenyagist.com, a representative from Supa Loaf, one of the leading bread bakers, confirmed that the prices would increase by either Ksh5 or Ksh10 in most categories.
The wholesale price of the 200 grams mini loaf will cost at Ksh30, while the retail price will remain at Ksh35.
The 400 grams loaf will retail at Ksh60, representing at Ksh5 increase. The wholesale price will remain at Ksh55.
The 600 grams loaf will increase by Ksh5 to Ksh90, from the initial price of Ksh85, while the wholesale price will cost Ksh83.
The 800 grams bread will increase from Ksh110 to Ksh120, representing a 9.09 percent hike. 1.5 kilograms loaf will see a surge in price by Ksh20, from Ksh200 to the new price Ksh220.
The representative, however, did not divulge details of the reasons that informed the upward review of their pricing. The new prices comes on the backdrop of high inflation that has been occasioned by the rise in prices of food and basic commodities.
According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, inflation rate increased to all time high of 6.47 percent in April 2022, from 5.56 percent in the month of March, representing a 0.91 per cent jump.
According to KNBS, food prices skyrocketed by 12 percent with cooking oil denoting the highest increment of 41.7 percent.
Wheat flour had a 24.7 percent increment, potatoes showed a 22.4 percent while maize flour rose by 14.7 percent. Paw paws and ripe bananas however dropped by 11.2 percent and 1.9 percent respectively.
Fuel prices on the other hand revealed an 8.5 percent surge- showing that Kenyans will have to bear the brunt of the high cost of living especially for parents who have to contend with children going back to school.
