In a statement on Wednesday, November 17, Kananu expressed her wish to be deputized by Mutungi who is also the current Chief of Staff at City Hall.
Mutungi was appointed as Chief of Staff by former acting Nairobi Governor and current Speaker Benson Mutura to replace Brian Kamau Mugo in January 2021.
The nomination will be tabled before the Nairobi County Assembly where MCAs will approve or reject it through a majority vote.
If successful, Mutungi will become the fourth Nairobi Deputy Governor after Jonathan Mueke (2013-2017), Polycarp Igathe (August 2017- January 2018) and Kananu who assumed office in January this year.
Kananu was sworn in as Nairobi’s third governor in a lush event hosted at the Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC) on November 17, 2021, after the impeachment of his predecessor Mike Sonko in December 2020.
She had served as the city’s acting governor following a lawsuit by Sonko that barred her from officially taking over the office.
