  • Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen sought to advise Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko when he appeared on Citizen TV’s JKL on Wednesday night alongside Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja.

They addressed a number of issues with the interview coming only a day after dramatic scenes were witnessed at County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi‘s office as MCAs sought to enforce an impeachment motion passed against her.

The Elgeyo Marakwet Senator advised Sonko, who claimed he was the next target for impeachment after Elachi, to appoint a Deputy Governor and further decentralize services.

“I think it is time that Sonko gets his deputy to office and allow his staff to decentralize services and take them to the people; if he does so he will do so much more,” Murkomen noted.

He further hit out at Nairobi MCAs for “violating every law in the book” in Elachi’s ouster.

“I think it’s sad…My advise to Elachi is that when people don’t like you, there’s no need to push any further,” he stated.

His sentiments were echoed by Sakaja who reiterated the importance of decentralizing key services in the city.

“If anything we need to decentralize the operations of the city; Nairobi County cannot be run centrally,” he noted.

Sakaja further dismissed criticism of Sonko by MCAs over his decision to operate from his Mua Hills home in Machakos County.

“I think what is important to the people of Nairobi is not where Sonko stays or operates from, what is important is whether he is able to deliver to the needs of the people.

“He was not elected to live in Nairobi he was elected to transform the city,” he explained.
