  • Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) officials cautioned against interdiction of teachers suffering from alcoholism or drug abuse by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

KUPPET called on the government to instead rehabilitate and reinstate teachers affected by addiction.

They explained that interdiction was partly responsible for under-staffing in some schools as well as poor academic performance.

KUPPET General Secretary Akelo Misori, his deputy Moses Nthurima and the Meru County branch executive secretary Karuti Nchebere were among those who voiced the sentiments.

‘In order to have continuity and ensure that schools don’t suffer losses in case a teacher is interdicted specifically as a result of alcohol or drug addiction, TSC should make sure the disciplinary process includes rehabilitation.

KUPPET officials cut a cake to celebrate the union’s 20th anniversary

“Schools shouldn’t miss the manpower bearing in mind that employment of teachers is a real challenge. For our children to continue having services a more proactive intervention like rehabilitation is vital,” stated Misori.

They spoke during the Meru Branch Annual General Meeting and KUPPET 20th anniversary celebrations.

Nthurima argued that the role of teachers in society was quite important as he termed interdiction as unfortunate.

He called for a rehab programme to be established stating that many people at the grassroots depended on teachers for their livelihoods as they bought things and hired people.

TSC was also asked to speed up the follow-up process as many files had gone missing in unclear circumstances.
