  • Harambee Stars bagged a 1-0 win over the Flames of Malawi at the Kasarani Stadium three days after seeing off Ghana’s fancied Black Stars at the same venue.

A 77th minute goal from Gor Mahia playmaker Francis Kahata was enough to deal with the visitors in the FIFA International Friendly.

With Kenya having also recorded a 1-0 win against Ghana in AFCON  2019 qualifiers, the positive results are expected to see  Stars rise up a number of places in the updated global rankings.

While Kenya sit at 112, 4-time African champions Ghana are perched at 45 with Malawi at 123.

Head Coach Sebastien Migne made only two changes for the game against Malawi with Jesse Were coming in for Michael Olunga while Jockins Atudo replaced the injured Philemon Otieno.

Having lost to Morocco 3-0 in AFCON qualifying, Malawi were the hungrier team in the opening stages as they sought to get an opener.

John Banda came close for the visitors in the 29th minute, with keeper Patrick Matasi dealing with the shot before it was cleared by Musa Mohammed.

Kenya’s first-half chances were squandered by Were, Dennis Odhiambo and Eric Johanna.

In the second-half, however, the Stars showed more fight and pressed harder for a goal.

A move by substitute Erick ‘Marcello’ Ouma and Aboud Omar eventually allowed Kahata to get in position and finish off a fine ball delivered by Ouma.

Kenya face Ethiopia twice in October in games that could play a defining role in the team’s quest to qualify for AFCON for the first time since 2004.

They face Ethiopia away on October 10th before welcoming them at home three days later.
