  • Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa declared his intention to vie for a seat on the powerful FIFA Council as Heads of African federations meet in Egypt on September 30.

The FIFA Council consists of 37 members; one President, elected by the FIFA Congress; eight Vice-Presidents, and 28 other members elected by the member associations – for a term of four years each.

If elected, Mwendwa would also serve as an advisor to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

The position comes with an estimated annual salary of Sh35 million.

Mwendwa touted his plan to promote football in Kenya and Africa, with the thirty-nine year old further dismissing criticism on his supposed youth.

“I am qualified and experienced to perform this role as an adviser to the Fifa president.

“Those saying I am young should know that it is an advantage. I have more energy to move around and help football to grow in Africa,” he stated.

Mwendwa promised to focus on grassroots football, coaching an youth football.

He stated that the three areas were the weak links in development of football on the continent.

Other key figures in African football interested in the seat are; South Africa FA boss Danny Jordan, Tanzania’s Leodegar Tenga, Malawi’s Walter Nyamilandu and Elvis Chetty from Seychelles.

While a noticeable improvement in the management of FKF has been witnessed since his election in 2016, his tenure has also been marred by detrimental squabbles with the KPL and accusations of lack of professionalism in the management of various national teams amid inconsistent performances.
