Majority Leader Aden Duale has exposed alleged big fish who are likely culpritsĀ in the recently exposed contraband sugarĀ racket.
In the wake of the ongoing crackdown, the Garissa Township legislator has claimed thatĀ 1m bags of suspicious sugar are being hidden in a warehouse owned by Nakuru Blankets.
“One company imported 185,000 metric tones. That company used four different companies,” Duale revealed shedding light on the complex nature of the illegal trade.
“West Kenya Sugar Company imported 34,600 metric tonnes. The same importer used Sukari industries and imported 34,000 metric tonnes duty free.
“The same company used a company called Menengai refineries and imported 40,000 metric tonnes and another called Amnei was used to import 74,000 metric tonnes,” the MP detailed.
Besides, the Duale has accused the governmentĀ of profiling small fish in the war against counterfeit products while leaving the major perpetrators of the illegal trade free.
Speaking in parliament, the legislator further claimed that tonnes of the illegal sugar were being hidden in 9 other different locations includingĀ at go-downsĀ in Nairobi and Mombasa.
Duale also pointed out a trader who he accused of sitting in the Kenya Forest Service Board yet ironically he is the greatest miller in the country and was allegedly behind the wiping out of the forests.
In a heated debate in parliament, Duale promised to further table a list of 100 companies that were allowed to import sugar on a duty-free basis.
A tough speaking Duale quipped: “If we have agreed to clean Kenya let us clean it completely. Not halfway!”
The government has intensified the war against counterfeit products which are estimated to be costing the country an estimated Ksh200 billion annually.
On Tuesday, two truckloads of undeclared tyres were seized in Eastleigh, Nairobi by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
This comes as the government moves on an intensified crackdown to nabĀ major tax evaders and illegal traders in the country where the Majority leader extensively mentionedĀ RaiPly andĀ PanPaper Mills in his presentation on the fake-sugar saga.
