  • Embakasi East legislator Babu Owino hinted at voting against the implementation of the eight percent Value Added Tax on fuel products proposed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Babu, through his Twitter account, stated: “On matter 8% VAT on petroleum products, my one vote on Thursday will be for the people of Kenya because I am a father, husband and an inspiration to the future leadership of this nation.”

His sentiments came barely hours after NASA held a parliamentary group meeting and resolved to support the proposed 8 percent VAT with several conditions the coalition expects the President to meet.

NASA asked that all public expenditure be economical and urged the government to cut too many unnecessary purchases that were wasteful.

“We want to see the government live within its means. The government has to do what Kenyan families across the country are doing which is to cut what we can’t afford,” Minority Whip Junet Mohamed stated.

The coalition also demanded that the government must also show a serious commitment on completion of parastatal reforms.

NASA asked the government to unveil a clear plan that will lead to new jobs for the unemployed and cut taxes for small businesses.

During the Tuesday presser, NASA asked the government to fight corruption and come up with a clear program for the end game.

President Kenyatta had proposed the VAT cuts last week after he had rejected the Finance Bill, 2018, which sought to shelve the implementation of the 16 percent levy.

He later sent the Bill back to the National Assembly with proposals which included reducing the levy from the earlier set rate of 16 to 8 percent.
